Radheef data for download

I was moving the sites we had on our server when I found the tab-delimited file I used to import data into the Online Radheef I launched sometime ago. The data it contains is extracted from the original Radheef software published by the National Centre for Linguistics and Historical Research. There ARE mistakes in it contents - partly a reflection of the mistakes in the texts in the original Radheef and partly errors that had creeped in when I had extracted and formatted the data.

Anyway, I am putting up the data for grabs. It can be used for many a purpose - Dhivehi spelling checks, reverse word lookup by word definition etc. Feel inspired, make something useful and share!

Have fun.

WebSMS Widget source code

A few weeks ago, I demoed an AJAX based widget for sending SMS intended to be used on websites and blogs. As I mentioned in that post, here is the source code to the widget ready for cannibalization. Extract the ZIP file and read the "readme.txt" for instructions. The "templates" folder contains the CSS and image files ready for customization and tweaking.

Enjoy ;-)

Millzero.com re-design

My best buddy Nishan (who goes by the handle "Millzero" on the internet) is a great, aspiring photographer. He started off on photography by himself around 2001 when we were running MaldivianUnderground.com together. He has come a long way since and works real hard to better himself. He produces fantastic photos now...

Anyway, I developed a new design for his photographic website/blog and just launched the revamped site. Check out his site: Millzero.com

WebSMS for blogs, websites and Google personalised home

Here is something I conjured up in the minutes of freedom after "work" last night. It is what I would call a widget - a WebSMS widget. The idea for the application came after a blog reader by the handle Vayfarer emailed me asking for advice on implementing a "Gadget" for Google personalised home. Anyway, two and a half hours later, I had this baby all wrapped up just as I wanted it.

This "widget" can be added to your blog or website. You will be able to host this widget on your own server when I release the source code, until then you are welcome to use the service based at the Technova server. The widget supports skinning the widget with your own CSS files and so can be made to fit the look of your blog and/or website. I will be releasing the source code for the project soon - right after I flush any major bugs that crops up the coming few days.

I've also made available a "gadget" package for adding the WebSMS widget to the Google "personalised home".

PS: Other SMS related stuff that I've released previously include, a SMS Sender program which you can run on your Windows/Mac/Linux computer and a WebSMS tool for phpBB forums.

Magnetic implant

I stumbled across a very interesting article featured on a body modification enthusiast site sometime around May/June. The article had popped up on Digg and had gotten quite a lot of coverage. The article documents the process of implanting a neodymium magnet under the author's skin and his experiences after this body modification procedure. The magnet was tiny and protected by a biocompatible sheathing to prevent the (toxic) neodynium from reacting with the body. Neodymium is a rare earth natural magnet that is very very powerful. I had read about it in a Edmund Scientific catalog around the time I was in Grade 8 and had fancied owning one ever since after being very fascinated with the magnet powers these magnets supposedly posses.

The article stirred up curiosity in me in two things - the magnetic power of the magnet, and the sensory extension the implant process brings. I am especially curious about the latter. Any sensory extension, be it temporary or permanent, would be quite an amazing feeling. Maybe I am wrong but I reckon this would be an easy way to experience new/artificial sensations we could feel once science and technology lead to easier/cheaper routes to sensory/mental enhancement via direct neural connections ie. the cyborg era!

I am now decided and eager to undergo the magnet implantation process. I also have a few ideas burning on some experiments I want to run if/when I get the implant done. All that remains now is to get those magnets and get someone to slice my hand open and dump the magnet in. Very simple. I hope...

TCon 01

TCon is a Technology Convention I had planned to execute in Male' last year. However, several problems cropped up to stall progress in making it a reality - the final blow to the venture being that I had to leave for UK before things were finalised and organised.

Anyway, I am attempting again to hold the convention this year. Hopefully, this year can be first year of this educational, non-profit, non-commercial, tech convention. Current plans are to conduct the two-day convention at Dharubaaruge some time in early December 2006. The event will, ideally, be free for all to attend. The event will feature a set of lectures/presentations and a set of participatory workshops. It is hoped that local specialists and experts will volunteer to deliver the various lectures and lead the workshops.

Information regarding the convention will soon be placed on the event website www.tcon.info. The current website contains outdated information as it was prepared for the planned event for last year. Interested parties/individuals are requested to contact me. Lectures, workshops, demoes and event execution all need your help to be made a reality. This really is an excellent opportunity to have some wicked tech fun!

I met up with chopey and primary0 tonight to discuss the project and get their input - they've pledged to make this a reality. We discussed possible event items, topics and programme style. We all agreed to adhere to making it as much of a "technology" convention as possible, although I have no doubt that computer science topics will feature as the majority this time atleast. The event programme we formulated will be placed on the TCon site soon. Keep and eye for updates on this!

MTDC site goes live

We (Technova) just brought the (temporary) website for the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation online. We scored the project only a few days ago and had very little time to develop the website. I am handling the project at Technova and the current site design for MTDC is my produce.

Check out the site here.
